It was a victorious weekend for Team Cormier who won the main event in the 32-team Carleton Place Curling Club "Classic" Bonspiel (formerly known as the Leatherworks) on January 8-11. The team consists of David Cormier at skip, Ross Cotten at vice, Graham Allan at second, and Don Campbell at lead – a team that plays in the HCC evening leagues on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
It took a 4-0 record to reach the final against Team Gardner from North Grenville which was a real barn burner of a game. Surging to a 3-0 lead after 3 ends was a great start largely thanks to a critical shot in the second when the team placed their last rock on the pin around the guards to steal a point. Then the tables turned when the hammer flipped and the game was tied 3-3 after 6 ends. But a well-earned deuce in 7 gave Team Cormier a critical 2-point lead going into the final end. Featuring most rocks in play and a very crowded 4 foot, the final end came down to a peel weight final shot from Team Gardner who came up one rock short for a 5-4 win for Team Cormier.
Thanks goes to all of the other teams that make this event so fun year after year and the Carleton Place Curling Club for a terrific event, great (fast) ice from Rick Picard and his ice team, and for stocking enough Sunsplit to last the weekend.
