Reported by Jeff Wainwright
From February 6–8, Katrina Frlan and Erika Wainwright (Skip and Vice of Huntley’s Team Frlan) travelled to Welland, ON as members of the Guelph Gryphons Varsity curling team (along with Second Aila Thompson, Lead Kelsea Marcolini and Fifth Liana Flanagan) to compete at the Ontario University Athletics Curling Championships.
After pool play, the Gryphons advanced to the knockout round as the number two seed and faced the McMaster Marauders in the final, where they forced their opponents to concede after re-taking the lead in the seventh end. For the first time in 46 years, the Guelph Gryphons captured the gold medal and the provincial title.
Katrina earned the Rookie of the Year and MVP awards at the championship and was named Guelph Athlete of the Week. The provincial win also meant that the Gryphons would be off to compete at the national U Sports Curling Championships in Regina on February 17. Congratulations Katrina and Erika – well done!
