Inducted January 2024 Nominated by Murray Pearson
Peter’s leadership and contributions to the Huntley Curling Club and generally to curling in the Ottawa Valley are significant and have had a major impact on the growth of the sport. Consistent with his leadership, people, and issue management skills, he contributed not for recognition but rather as a commitment to serve what he considers his community of friends and fellow curlers.
Peter was on the Board 3 times for a total of 8 years, serving as president for 3 years. He successfully managed several challenging situations that required tact and diplomacy, as he worked to revamp and improve ice conditions, finances, and the curling program at Huntley.
One such challenge was the leadership he demonstrated in managing a two-year negotiation with City officials that effectively eliminated property tax payments and freed up $85K in accrued taxes for capital expenditure purposes.
Peter demonstrated leadership in several other areas, such as the move to paid bartenders, dealing with the City, setting and tracking volunteer hours, hiring a Level-4 Ice Technician; some of which were controversial, requiring tact, patience and consensus building to convince Board members and curlers of the merit in moving forward.
Peter also served as HCC club manager as part of a one-year experiment where he provided services as outlined below. He helped manage fundraising during Covid which was a challenge at a time when businesses and donors were hurting financially. Noteworthy too, he did this as a former member as he was sidelined for health reasons.
He was instrumental in the development, promotion, and implementation of the Last Rock and Presidents Cup Challenge. He not only served HCC, but also played a significant leadership role with CurlON, the OVCA and Curling Canada, where he worked for several years on a variety of curling programs that served curlers across the Valley.
