I am sad to say that Ron Gamble passed away in June of this year. Ron joined the Curling club in the early years and played mostly in our competitive leagues. His face was well known in bonspiels and competitions in our area and he represented the club at the provincial level twice. In the recent years Ron curled in the Valley seniors league and the Tues afternoon league. We will miss his competitive edge and his great sense of humour.
Dave McCartney left us just three days after the end of last season, on April 16, 2018. He was 74. Dave was a member for only three seasons, having joined us from overseas following his retirement, but he made his mark rather quickly. A strong curler and a fine person, Dave was always willing to play any position, quick to compliment a player on any team for a good shot, and just plain pleasant to be around.
Walter Jastremski left us at the age of 82, on March 6, 2018. Few curlers were as keen as Walter who was known to curl in the morning, go home for a quick lunch and return for an afternoon draw. While he could finesse a rock into position, he was best known for throwing 'rockets' with great accuracy. Walter was also HCC's unofficial handyman - most recently, he decided to undertake the strengthening of the tables in the lounge which had been poorly manufactured. One of Walter's other talents was seen at Club gatherings when he brought out his accordion and added a musical note to the festivities.
Stewart Given passed away on February 19, 2016, at the age of 86, just a year after he was awarded HCC's Honourary Member status. Stewart graduated with distinction from the University of Saskatchewan in 1950 with a degree in Agriculture. He then worked on the family farm before starting a long and rewarding career with Farm Credit Canada. He met his wife May in Prince Albert where he worked as club manager. They were married in 1958, and have three daughters and 5 grandkids. In 1988, Stewart joined HCC's Board of Directors, working on various projects, serving as President in 1989-90, managing the onerous and ongoing challenges of expanding the club to four sheets. Stewart and May organized and coordinated the fixed teams league for Monday afternoon and later donated the Give'N Take Trophy for this popular league. Stewart never hesitated to volunteer his time and energy to the club and is missed by his many friends.
