They Sweep No More

Ken Peskett, a Founding and Honourary Member passed away recently, after a long illness. Ken was a key player at the outset, organizing the work crews required to build the Huntley Curling Club in 1980, helping lay the concrete foundation for the club. He curled in the mixed and men’s leagues, locally and provincially. Sadly, a broken leg in 2004 and again in 2008 brought his curling days to an end. At the club, Ken was known for wearing a Stetson hat to every game. Ken and Jackie (who passed in 2015) were heavily involved in the Scottish tours. In 1988 and 1992, they hosted Scotland’s Lord Elgin teams and in 1990 and 1998, represented our Club in Scotland. He spent many hours teaching the game he loved to beginners. He was always there to help out at club events. Ken enjoyed the social side too, he was an excellent dancer and was a good friend to all.

The Board is sad to report that May Given has passed away peacefully at the age of 93, in hospital with family by her side. May's sense of humor, her warm and caring nature were appreciated by all, she made everyone feel comfortable in her presence. May grew up in Saskatchewan where she met and married Stewart, the love of her life for 58 years. Both May and Stewart were made Honourary HCC Members in 2015 in recognition of their significant and lengthy contributions to the Club. She and Stewart were anchors in organizing many leagues and bonspiels that continue, the Give’nTake league being a prime example. May was very proud of her family and her Icelandic Heritage; she travelled twice to Iceland to meet extended relatives. She learned Icelandic in her childhood home, understanding and speaking it throughout her life. May hung up her broom in 2020 after a lifetime of curling in clubs across Canada. Huntley was blessed to have her in our fold, she will be sorely missed by all. Our condolences to all her family, many friends and curling colleagues.

It is with profound sorrow that we announce the passing of Dixie Aliston Trenholm at the age of 81 years on May 1, 2024. The curling and local community will miss her. Dixie Trenholm was a founding member of Huntley Curling Club, back in 1980, along with her husband of 55 years Locksley, who became Club President not long after. Dixie and Locksley were both awarded Honorary Member status in 2014.

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Karen Johnson, with family by her side, on Monday, April 3, 2023, at the age of 58, after a courageous battle with cancer. Karen had been battling a rare form of breast cancer since 2017.  She was an amazing friend, mother and life partner to Kerry.
